Cache Hit Ratio Calculator
Cache hit ratio is the share of measured requests served from a cache rather than reaching the origin. It helps compare cache policies when request types and measurement windows are consistent.
How to use this calculator
- Enter non-negative whole request counts from the same window.
- Check that the input values use the same units and reporting period before comparing scenarios.
- Change one assumption at a time to see which input drives the result.
Formula and method
Hit ratio (%) = cache hits / (cache hits + cache misses) × 100.
- 850,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × 100 = 85%.
- A high hit ratio is not necessarily a high cache value if some requests are much more expensive than others. Confirm the monitoring system’s definitions of hits, misses and bypasses.
Worked examples
Worked example
850,000 hits and 150,000 misses were recorded in one monitoring window.
850,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × 100 = 85%.
The observed cache hit ratio is 85%.
Understanding the result
The observed cache hit ratio is 85%.
A high hit ratio is not necessarily a high cache value if some requests are much more expensive than others. Confirm the monitoring system’s definitions of hits, misses and bypasses.
Important notes
Enter non-negative whole request counts from the same window.
The displayed result uses the entered assumptions; validate important estimates against source measurements, specifications or qualified guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Is cache hit ratio the same as bandwidth saved?
No. Request counts do not show each response size; use a traffic-weighted measure for bandwidth impact.
Can misses exceed hits?
Yes. That simply means more requests reached the origin than were served from cache.
