Customer Profitability Calculator

Customer profitability estimates the amount remaining after the specific direct, support and allocated costs that you include. It helps expose cost-to-serve differences between customer segments.

How to use this calculator

  1. Use amounts from the same customer segment and reporting period.
  2. Check that the input values use the same units and reporting period before comparing scenarios.
  3. Change one assumption at a time to see which input drives the result.

Formula and method

Customer contribution = revenue − direct costs − support costs − allocated overhead; margin = contribution / revenue × 100.

  • 48,500 − 16,400 − 3,200 − 4,100 = 24,800 contribution.
  • Allocation rules can change the result significantly. Do not treat arbitrary overhead allocation as causal, and keep time periods and currency consistent.

Worked examples

Worked example

Revenue is 48,500, with 16,400 direct costs, 3,200 support costs and 4,100 allocated overhead.

48,500 − 16,400 − 3,200 − 4,100 = 24,800 contribution.

The estimated contribution is 24,800 before any costs not included in the model.

Understanding the result

The estimated contribution is 24,800 before any costs not included in the model.

Allocation rules can change the result significantly. Do not treat arbitrary overhead allocation as causal, and keep time periods and currency consistent.

Important notes

Use amounts from the same customer segment and reporting period.

The displayed result uses the entered assumptions; validate important estimates against source measurements, specifications or qualified guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as gross margin?

Not necessarily. This version includes support and allocated overhead in addition to direct cost.

Can a customer appear unprofitable due to allocation?

Yes. Review the allocation method and incremental costs before making customer decisions.
