Newsletter Click-Through Rate Calculator
Calculate recorded email open rate, unique click-through rate, and click-to-open rate from delivered messages, recorded unique opens and unique clickers. The three values use different denominators, so this page keeps them separate to make campaign reporting easier to interpret.
How to use this calculator
- Enter delivered emails, not just the number of messages originally queued or attempted.
- Enter recorded unique opens and unique clickers from the same provider report, campaign, and attribution window.
- Review the delivered-based click-through rate separately from the click-to-open rate, and compare campaigns only when tracking definitions are consistent.
Email engagement formulas
Recorded open rate = unique opens ÷ delivered emails × 100. Unique CTR = unique clickers ÷ delivered emails × 100. Click-to-open rate = unique clickers ÷ unique opens × 100, when recorded opens are greater than zero.
- Unique counts reduce duplicate recipient activity only as defined by the email platform. Clicks can exceed recorded opens, so the calculator does not force clickers to be less than openers.
- When unique opens are zero, click-to-open rate is not applicable rather than zero divided by zero.
Worked examples
Worked example: campaign with 10,000 deliveries
A campaign records 3,200 unique opens and 480 unique clickers from 10,000 delivered emails.
Open rate = 3,200 ÷ 10,000 = 32%. CTR = 480 ÷ 10,000 = 4.8%. Click-to-open = 480 ÷ 3,200 = 15%.
The delivered-based CTR is 4.8%; the click-to-open rate is 15% using recorded opens.
Understanding the result
CTR measures clicks relative to delivered messages; click-to-open rate measures clicks relative to recorded opens.
Open tracking is imperfect in modern email, and recorded opens may not equal the number of people who actually read a message.
Important notes
Email providers may define clicks and denominators differently. Privacy protections, image proxying, automated security scans and bot filtering can affect recorded opens and clicks; use consistent definitions when comparing campaigns.
The calculator reports descriptive rates and does not determine whether a campaign is successful or compliant.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CTR and click-to-open rate?
CTR in this calculator divides unique clickers by delivered emails. Click-to-open rate divides unique clickers by recorded unique opens, so the denominator is smaller when some messages are opened.
Why can clicks be greater than recorded opens?
Tracking methods and reporting systems can record clicks and opens differently, including privacy controls and automated link scanning. The metric may exceed 100% under some provider definitions, so interpret provider data consistently.
What happens if there are no recorded opens?
The calculator reports click-to-open rate as not applicable because the denominator is zero. It still calculates delivered-based CTR if delivered email count is positive.
