Video Engagement Metrics Calculator

Calculate a video engagement rate, subscriber conversion rate, average percentage viewed, and estimated watch hours from views and interaction counts. These measures provide different signals, so the calculator labels each denominator instead of combining them into one score.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter video views and the counts of likes, comments, shares and subscribers gained for the same reporting window.
  2. Enter video length and average view duration in seconds, using the same platform report and audience scope.
  3. Review each percentage with its definition, and compare videos only when the platform defines views and attributed subscribers consistently.

Video performance formulas

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. Subscriber conversion = subscribers gained ÷ views × 100. Average viewed = average view duration ÷ video length × 100. Estimated watch hours = views × average view duration in seconds ÷ 3,600.

  • The engagement rate here uses views as the denominator, not reach, impressions, or unique viewers. Other analytics providers may define engagement rate differently.
  • Average percentage viewed can exceed 100% when a platform counts repeated plays or looping in average view duration.

Worked examples

Worked example: a 45-second video

A video records 50,000 views, 3,500 likes, 200 comments, 400 shares, and 125 attributed subscribers gained. Its average view duration is 27 seconds.

Interactions = 4,100; engagement rate = 4,100 ÷ 50,000 = 8.2%. Subscriber conversion = 0.25%. Average viewed = 27 ÷ 45 = 60%. Watch time = 50,000 × 27 ÷ 3,600 = 375 hours.

The sample metrics are 8.2% engagement, 0.25% subscribers per view, 60% average viewed, and 375 estimated watch hours.

Understanding the result

Use the same attribution window for views, interactions and subscriber gains. Platform totals can change as reporting is processed.

Watch time is estimated from the average view duration and views supplied; it may not equal a platform’s finalized eligible watch-time metric.

Important notes

The calculation uses the counts and average duration you enter. Platforms define views, engagement and subscriber attribution differently; repeated plays or looping can make average percentage viewed exceed 100%.

These descriptive metrics do not prove that a content change caused a performance difference.

Frequently asked questions

Which interactions count as engagement here?

This calculator sums likes, comments and shares. It deliberately shows its definition; add other events only if you are recalculating the formula with a consistent definition.

Why can average percentage viewed exceed 100%?

If viewers replay or loop a video and that behavior contributes to average view duration, the duration can exceed the video length. This is not necessarily a calculation error.

Is estimated watch time the same as monetized watch time?

No. It is views multiplied by the entered average view duration. Platform eligibility, filtering, reporting and monetization rules may use different definitions.
