2×2 Matrix Calculator

This 2×2 matrix tool calculates addition, subtraction, matrix multiplication, and the determinant for two small matrices. Each row has two values, and the rows are separated by a semicolon.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each matrix as two rows, such as “1, 2; 3, 4”. Use finite real numbers and a comma between columns.
  2. Check the labels and units before applying the result to a real task.
  3. Change one input at a time when comparing scenarios.

Formula and method

A+B = elementwise sum; (AB)ᵢⱼ = Σₖ AᵢₖBₖ; det(A)=ad−bc

  • A+B = elementwise sum; (AB)ᵢⱼ = Σₖ AᵢₖBₖ; det(A)=ad−bc
  • Only 2×2 matrices are supported. Larger matrices, symbolic values, and numerical conditioning are outside this tool’s scope.

Worked examples

Worked example

Let A = [1, 2; 3, 4] and B = [5, 6; 7, 8].

A+B = [6, 8; 10, 12], AB = [19, 22; 43, 50], and det(A) = 1×4−2×3 = −2.

A+B = [6, 8; 10, 12], AB = [19, 22; 43, 50], and det(A) = 1×4−2×3 = −2.

Frequently asked questions

Why is matrix multiplication not the same as elementwise multiplication?

Matrix multiplication combines row and column products and adds them. It follows its own dimensional rules, so its result is generally different from multiplying corresponding entries.

Can I reverse A × B?

You can, but B × A usually produces a different matrix. Matrix multiplication is not generally commutative.

What does a zero determinant mean for a 2×2 matrix?

A zero determinant means the matrix is singular and has no ordinary inverse. This page reports determinants for both entered matrices.
