Average Calculator
The Average Calculator brings together common measures of a data set: arithmetic mean, median, mode, and range. These measures answer different questions, so checking more than one can describe a set more clearly than a single average alone.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the observations as a separated list and review each measure returned by the calculator.
- Review the worked five observations and compare its arithmetic with the inputs you plan to use.
- Change one input at a time when exploring a different scenario, and keep units and assumptions consistent.
Mean, median, mode, and range
Mean = sum of values ÷ count; range = maximum − minimum. The median is the middle ordered value, and the mode is the most frequent value.
- Sort values for the median and count repetitions for the mode; the mean uses every observation and can be pulled by extreme values.
- The page's numerical output is calculated from the values entered; it does not independently verify whether those inputs fit the real-world situation.
Worked examples
Five observations
For 2, 4, 4, 6, and 9, the mean is 5 and the median is 4.
(2 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 9) ÷ 5 = 5; range = 9 − 2 = 7
Mean 5, median 4, mode 4, range 7.
Understanding the result
The mean describes a balance point, the median describes the middle rank, and the mode shows the most common value.
A mean can be misleading when data are heavily skewed or contain outliers; a data set can also have no unique mode.
Important notes
Check whether your assignment or report asks for sample or population statistics and preserve the original data values.
Displayed values may be rounded for readability. Keep appropriate precision for intermediate calculations and check the unit labels before using the result.
