BMI Calculator
The BMI Calculator estimates Body Mass Index from height and weight. BMI is a screening measure that compares body weight with height and can provide a simple population-level indication of whether a person falls within a particular BMI range.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your height using the available height fields.
- Enter your body weight using the available weight fields.
- Review the calculated BMI value.
- Use the result as a screening measurement rather than as a complete assessment of health or body composition.
BMI formula
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in metres²
- BMI uses body weight and height to produce a single numerical value.
- Because BMI is based only on height and weight, it does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, fat distribution, fitness, or overall health.
- The same BMI can occur in people with very different body compositions, so the number should be interpreted in context.
Worked examples
Example calculation
A person weighing 70 kg with a height of 1.75 m can calculate BMI using their weight and height.
70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.86
The estimated BMI is approximately 22.9.
Understanding the result
BMI is useful as a broad screening measure, especially when looking at groups of people, but it has important limitations when applied to an individual.
Muscular people can have a higher BMI because muscle contributes to body weight. BMI also does not show where body fat is stored.
Age, sex, ethnicity, medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, and other factors can affect how a BMI value should be interpreted.
Important notes
This calculator is for informational purposes and is not a medical diagnosis.
BMI interpretation for children and teenagers differs from adult BMI interpretation and generally uses age- and sex-specific growth references.
If you have concerns about your weight, health, nutrition, or body composition, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions
What does BMI stand for?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a numerical measure calculated from weight and height.
Does BMI measure body fat?
No. BMI uses weight and height and does not directly measure body fat or distinguish muscle from fat.
Is BMI suitable for everyone?
BMI has limitations and is not equally informative for every person or situation. Children, pregnant people, highly muscular individuals, and people with certain health conditions may require different or additional assessments.
