Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator helps estimate a gratuity amount and the resulting total based on a bill and tip percentage. It can be useful when splitting restaurant bills, checking service charges, or quickly comparing different tip amounts.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the bill or service amount.
  2. Enter the desired tip percentage.
  3. Review the calculated tip amount.
  4. Check the final total if you want to include both the original bill and the tip.

Tip calculation formula

Tip = Bill amount × (Tip percentage ÷ 100). Total = Bill amount + Tip.

  • The tip percentage is converted into a decimal and applied to the bill amount.
  • The resulting tip amount is added to the original bill when calculating the total.
  • If a service charge has already been added to the bill, check whether you want to calculate an additional tip on the original amount or another amount.

Worked examples

Example: 15% tip

A restaurant bill is €60 and you want to calculate a 15% tip.

€60 × 0.15 = €9

The tip is €9 and the total is €69.

Example: 20% tip

A service costs €125 and the chosen tip rate is 20%.

€125 × 0.20 = €25

The tip is €25 and the total is €150.

Understanding the result

The calculated tip is based on the percentage and amount entered. It does not determine what gratuity is appropriate in a particular country or situation.

Some establishments include a service charge separately from a discretionary tip.

If a bill is being shared, rounding each person's amount can make the final total differ slightly from the exact mathematical result.

Important notes

Customary tipping practices vary significantly by country, industry, and establishment.

Check your bill for an existing service charge before adding another gratuity.

For group bills, agree on the rounding method before splitting the final amount.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 20% tip on €50?

A 20% tip on €50 is €10, making the total €60 before any other charges.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not necessarily. A service charge is generally a charge added by the business, while a tip is typically an additional gratuity. The exact treatment depends on the establishment and local rules.

Can I calculate a tip for a group?

Yes. Calculate the total tip first and then divide the final amount according to the method your group chooses.
