VAT Calculator
The VAT Calculator estimates value-added tax by adding a rate to a net price or removing tax from a VAT-inclusive gross price. It helps separate the net amount, VAT amount, and total amount for a stated rate.
How to use this calculator
- Choose whether to add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a gross amount.
- Enter the amount in your chosen currency.
- Enter the applicable VAT rate as a percentage.
- Review the net price, tax amount, and gross price.
VAT formulas
Add VAT: VAT = net × rate; gross = net × (1 + rate). Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = gross − net, where rate is expressed as a decimal.
- When adding VAT, the rate is applied to the pre-tax net amount.
- When removing VAT, the gross total is divided by one plus the VAT rate; multiplying the gross total directly by the rate is not the correct reverse calculation.
Worked examples
Add VAT
A net price is €100 and the VAT rate is 21%.
VAT = €100 × 0.21 = €21; gross = €121.
The gross price is €121.
Remove VAT
A gross amount of €121 includes 21% VAT.
Net = €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100.
The included VAT is €21.
Understanding the result
VAT rates and treatment can differ between countries, products, customers, and transaction types.
A correct arithmetic result does not determine whether a transaction is legally taxable or eligible for exemption.
Important notes
Use the legally applicable rate and confirm whether the entered amount is net or gross.
This calculator does not provide tax advice or decide special VAT treatments.
