Discount Calculator
The Discount Calculator helps determine how much is saved when a percentage discount is applied to an original price and how much remains to be paid after the discount.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage.
- Review the calculated discount amount and the resulting price.
- For shopping comparisons, check whether taxes, shipping, fees, or additional promotions are included separately.
Discount formulas
Discount amount = Original price × (Discount rate ÷ 100). Final price = Original price − Discount amount.
- The discount percentage is applied to the original price.
- The calculated discount amount represents the portion removed from the original price before other charges are considered.
- The final discounted price is the original price minus the discount amount.
Worked examples
Example: 20% discount
An item originally costs €80 and has a 20% discount.
€80 × 0.20 = €16 discount; €80 − €16 = €64
The discount is €16 and the discounted price is €64.
Example: larger purchase
An item priced at €250 is discounted by 15%.
€250 × 0.15 = €37.50; €250 − €37.50 = €212.50
The discounted price is €212.50.
Understanding the result
A discount percentage describes the reduction from the original price. A 20% discount does not mean that 20 percentage points are removed from every possible price component.
Multiple discounts applied one after another are normally calculated sequentially rather than simply adding the percentages together.
Taxes, delivery charges, service fees, and other costs may be calculated separately depending on the retailer or transaction.
Important notes
Check whether the advertised discount applies to the full original price or only to selected products or portions of an order.
When comparing promotions, compare the actual final prices rather than assuming the promotion with the highest percentage always produces the lowest price.
Currency formatting and rounding can vary between retailers and payment systems.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage expressed as a decimal. Subtract the resulting discount amount from the original price to find the discounted price.
What is 20% off €100?
A 20% discount on €100 is €20, leaving a discounted price of €80.
Do two 20% discounts equal 40% off?
Not normally. If two 20% discounts are applied successively, the second discount is calculated from the already-reduced price, so the combined reduction is less than 40%.
