Ratio Calculator
The Ratio Calculator compares quantities in proportional terms. Ratios can simplify a recipe, compare scale drawings, express mixtures, or split a total in agreed proportions without treating the quantities as percentages by default.
How to use this calculator
- Enter both quantities and identify whether you want to simplify the ratio or scale it to a total.
- Review the worked simplify 18:24 and compare its arithmetic with the inputs you plan to use.
- Change one input at a time when exploring a different scenario, and keep units and assumptions consistent.
Simplifying a ratio
For a:b, divide both terms by their greatest common divisor; a scaled share is total × term ÷ sum of all terms.
- Ratios can be expressed with the same units removed when both quantities use the same unit. If the units differ, make sure the comparison is meaningful before simplifying.
- The page's numerical output is calculated from the values entered; it does not independently verify whether those inputs fit the real-world situation.
Worked examples
Simplify 18:24
Both values can be divided by 6 to obtain the smallest whole-number ratio.
18 ÷ 6 : 24 ÷ 6 = 3:4
The simplified ratio is 3:4.
Understanding the result
A 3:4 ratio contains seven total parts, with three assigned to the first quantity and four to the second.
Ratios do not show absolute size: 3:4 and 30:40 represent the same relationship but very different totals.
Important notes
Keep the order of the terms consistent; a:b is not interchangeable with b:a.
Displayed values may be rounded for readability. Keep appropriate precision for intermediate calculations and check the unit labels before using the result.
