Fixed Cost Allocation Calculator

This calculator distributes a shared fixed-cost pool in proportion to an activity driver such as machine hours, occupied square metres or service tickets. The chosen driver is a managerial assumption, not a universal rule.

How to use this calculator

  1. Ensure the selected units are part of the total driver units for the same period.
  2. Check that the input values use the same units and reporting period before comparing scenarios.
  3. Change one assumption at a time to see which input drives the result.

Formula and method

Cost per driver unit = total fixed cost / total driver units; selected allocation = cost per unit × selected units.

  • 18,000 ÷ 6,000 × 850 = 2,550 allocated.
  • A simple proportional allocation may not represent causal cost use. Document the driver and keep it consistent across the reports being compared.

Worked examples

Worked example

An 18,000 cost pool is allocated over 6,000 driver units; a team uses 850 units.

18,000 ÷ 6,000 × 850 = 2,550 allocated.

The selected activity receives an allocation of 2,550 under this method.

Understanding the result

The selected activity receives an allocation of 2,550 under this method.

A simple proportional allocation may not represent causal cost use. Document the driver and keep it consistent across the reports being compared.

Important notes

Ensure the selected units are part of the total driver units for the same period.

The displayed result uses the entered assumptions; validate important estimates against source measurements, specifications or qualified guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate variable costs?

No. It allocates a fixed-cost pool; variable costs need a separate model.

Can the allocation be changed?

Yes, but report the method and do not compare results across periods as if the basis were unchanged.
