Grade Needed Calculator

The Grade Needed Calculator works backward from a target overall grade to estimate the score required on a final assessment. It assumes the current grade covers the non-final portion and that the final assessment has a known percentage weight.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the current grade for completed work, the target overall grade, and the final assessment's share of the total grade.
  2. Review the worked final exam target and compare its arithmetic with the inputs you plan to use.
  3. Change one input at a time when exploring a different scenario, and keep units and assumptions consistent.

Required final assessment score

Required final % = [target overall % − current % × (1 − final weight)] ÷ final weight, with weight expressed as a fraction.

  • The result can exceed 100% if the target cannot be reached under the entered grade and weight assumptions.
  • The page's numerical output is calculated from the values entered; it does not independently verify whether those inputs fit the real-world situation.

Worked examples

Final exam target

Current coursework grade is 80%, target overall grade is 85%, and the final is worth 40%.

(85 − 80 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 92.5%

A final score of 92.5% is needed under these assumptions.

Understanding the result

A high final weight gives the final assessment more influence over the final overall grade.

Dropped scores, extra credit, category weighting, rounding policies, and grade curves can change the school's actual calculation.

Important notes

Confirm the syllabus weighting and how the current grade is calculated before relying on the target.

Displayed values may be rounded for readability. Keep appropriate precision for intermediate calculations and check the unit labels before using the result.
