Percentage Point Change Calculator
The Percentage Point Change Calculator compares two percentages and shows their absolute difference in percentage points as well as their relative percent change. This distinction is useful for rates, survey results, test pass rates, conversion rates, and other percentage-based measures.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the starting percentage between 0 and 100.
- Enter the ending percentage between 0 and 100.
- Read the percentage-point difference separately from the relative percentage change.
- If the starting percentage is zero, use the percentage-point difference because relative change from zero is undefined.
Percentage-point difference and relative change
Percentage-point change = ending percentage − starting percentage; relative change = (ending − starting) ÷ starting × 100.
- Percentage points are the direct arithmetic difference between two percentage values.
- Relative change divides the difference by the starting percentage, so a small baseline can create a large relative change.
- The relative-change formula is undefined when the starting percentage is zero.
Worked examples
Pass rate increases
A pass rate increases from 60% to 75%.
75 − 60 = 15 percentage points; 15 ÷ 60 × 100 = 25%.
The increase is 15 percentage points, or a 25% relative increase.
Understanding the result
A move from 60% to 75% is 15 percentage points, not 15% relative growth.
Always identify the baseline when reporting a relative percentage change.
Important notes
Enter percentage values such as 60 for 60%, not 0.60.
A percentage-point difference can be calculated when the starting percentage is zero, even though relative change cannot.
Frequently asked questions
What is a percentage point?
A percentage point is the direct difference between two percentages; for example, 75% − 60% = 15 percentage points.
Is a 15-point increase the same as a 15% increase?
No. From 60% to 75% is a 15-point increase and a 25% relative increase.
