Recipe Scaler Calculator

The Recipe Scaler changes ingredient quantities when the number of servings needs to increase or decrease. It provides a single scaling factor and optional adjusted quantities for up to four ingredient amounts.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the number of servings in the original recipe.
  2. Enter the target number of servings.
  3. Optionally enter up to four original ingredient quantities.
  4. Multiply each ingredient amount by the displayed scaling factor and preserve its original unit.

Recipe scaling formula

Scaling factor = target servings ÷ original servings; adjusted ingredient = original ingredient × scaling factor.

  • A scale factor of 2 doubles the quantities, while a scale factor of 0.5 halves them.
  • Some cooking variables, including seasoning, cooking time, pan dimensions, and food safety, may not scale linearly.

Worked examples

Make more servings

A recipe serves 4 and needs to serve 6. An ingredient originally uses 200 g.

6 ÷ 4 = 1.5; 200 g × 1.5 = 300 g.

Use 300 g of that ingredient as a linear starting point.

Understanding the result

Keep the unit associated with each ingredient consistent.

The calculator scales quantities mathematically; it does not adjust a recipe’s cooking method or guarantee the same result.

Important notes

Use the same ingredient units as the original recipe.

Recheck seasoning, equipment size, and cooking instructions when changing batch size substantially.

Frequently asked questions

How do I double a recipe?

Set target servings to twice the original servings; the scaling factor will be 2.

Should cooking time also be multiplied by the factor?

Not automatically. Cooking time depends on equipment, depth, temperature, and the recipe rather than servings alone.
