ROI Calculator

The ROI Calculator compares an initial investment with a final value to estimate total return on investment and, when a holding period is supplied, an annualized return. It is a simple comparison tool rather than a forecast or investment recommendation.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the initial amount invested or spent.
  2. Enter the final value or ending amount.
  3. Optionally enter the investment period in years to estimate an annualized return.
  4. Review total ROI together with the absolute profit or loss and the assumptions behind the calculation.

ROI formulas

Profit or loss = final value − initial investment; total ROI = ((final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment) × 100; annualized return = (final value ÷ initial investment)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.

  • Total ROI measures the simple gain or loss relative to the original amount.
  • The annualized figure converts the total growth into a compound-equivalent yearly rate when a holding period is entered.
  • This basic model does not automatically account for intermediate cash flows, taxes, fees, inflation, or different timing of contributions and withdrawals.

Worked examples

20% total ROI

An initial id="root"0,000 amount ends at id="root"2,000.

( id="root"2,000 − id="root"0,000) ÷ id="root"0,000 × 100 = 20%.

The simple total ROI is 20%.

Same result over three years

The same id="root"0,000 grows to id="root"2,000 over 3 years.

( id="root"2,000 ÷ id="root"0,000)^(1/3) − 1 ≈ 6.27%.

The compound-equivalent annualized return is about 6.27%.

Understanding the result

A higher total ROI does not automatically mean a better investment because the time period and risk can be different.

Annualized return is useful for comparing growth over different holding periods, but it is still a simplified representation when cash flows occur during the period.

Important notes

Do not use ROI alone to evaluate an investment decision.

Use consistent currency units and enter a positive initial amount for a meaningful percentage return.

Frequently asked questions

What does ROI measure?

ROI measures gain or loss relative to the initial amount, expressed as a percentage.

Why use annualized return?

It puts growth over a stated holding period onto a yearly compound-equivalent basis for easier comparisons.

Does ROI include fees and taxes?

Not unless those costs are reflected in the ending value or otherwise incorporated into the calculation.

ROI calculator use cases

ROI is a percentage measure used to compare a gain or loss with the original cost. This calculator is useful for a quick project, campaign, purchase, or investment-return check when the inputs are already known.

ROI does not by itself capture timing, risk, taxes, financing costs, or the full cash-flow pattern of a longer project. Treat it as a simple comparison metric and check the underlying assumptions before making an important decision.
