GPA Calculator
The GPA Calculator combines course grade points and course credits into a weighted grade-point average. It is useful when courses have different credit values, since a higher-credit course carries more weight in the total.
How to use this calculator
- Enter each course's grade-point value and its credits using the scale used by your school.
- Review the worked two courses and compare its arithmetic with the inputs you plan to use.
- Change one input at a time when exploring a different scenario, and keep units and assumptions consistent.
Credit-weighted GPA
GPA = sum(grade points × course credits) ÷ sum(course credits).
- Credits act as weights; adding a low-credit course should affect the overall result less than adding a high-credit course with the same grade point.
- The page's numerical output is calculated from the values entered; it does not independently verify whether those inputs fit the real-world situation.
Worked examples
Two courses
A 3.0 grade point in a 3-credit class and a 4.0 grade point in a 1-credit class produce a credit-weighted GPA.
(3.0×3 + 4.0×1) ÷ (3 + 1) = 3.25
Weighted GPA is 3.25 on the assumed grade-point scale.
Understanding the result
The overall result depends on the grading scale and the credit weighting supplied.
Schools differ in plus/minus values, pass/fail rules, repeated courses, and weighting conventions.
Important notes
Use your institution's official grade-point scale and course credits for a comparable result.
Displayed values may be rounded for readability. Keep appropriate precision for intermediate calculations and check the unit labels before using the result.
